What is Lancaster Capital Day?

Lancaster Capital Day is a free, family-friendly outdoor cultural festival celebrating Lancaster County’s history, food, music, craftsmanship, and community life.

Why is it called Capital Day?

On September 27, 1777, the Continental Congress met in Lancaster after fleeing Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War. For one day, Lancaster served as the capital of the United States.

When is the festival?

Lancaster Capital Day 2026 is planned for Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 10am to 5pm.

Does this mark the exact historical anniversary?

It's a close call. The Continental Congress was convened in Lancaster on Saturday, September 27th, 1777.
This year, Lancaster Capital Day will be celebrated on the last Saturday of the month, which is September 26th, 2026.

Where is the festival?

The festival will be held in downtown Lancaster, centered around Penn Square and the surrounding blocks of King and Queen Streets. For more location information, click here.

Do I need a ticket?

No. Lancaster Capital Day is completely free and open to the public.  If you plan to consume alcohol, just make sure to bring a valid I.D.

Who is the festival for?

Capital Day is for everyone. The event is designed to welcome people of all backgrounds, including Lancaster County residents, families, visitors, history lovers, food lovers, artists, makers, students, and anyone looking for a fun day.

Who organizes the festival?

Lancaster Capital Day is the brainchild of local small business owners and community leaders.  Event planning is being spearheaded by the City of Lancaster and the Keystone Events Project, a local 501(c)3 non-profit.

Is this connected to L’Italia Festival?

In a way, yes. Both events are organized by the Keystone Events Project in collaboration with local community leaders. L’Italia Festival takes place in downtown Lititz one week earlier on Saturday, September 19th.

What will there be to do?

Guests can look forward to great local food, music, vendors, family activities, historical programming, crafts, artisan demonstrations, and special cultural experiences. 

Can I apply as a vendor?

Yes, subject to application review, available space, and festival requirements.

Can I volunteer?

Yes. Interested volunteers should use the festival sign-up form or contact the organizers directly.
